Breast Reduction for Men (Gynecomastia)
Dr. Raine is a board certified plastic surgeon with over 25 years of and an expert in Gynecomastia and male breast reduction procedures.
Gynecomastia is a procedure that reduces the breast tissue abnormalities in adolescents and men and gives a more masculine appearance to the chest. This is accomplished by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and rarely skin. Large breasts can cause emotional and social anxiety. Men who take advantage of the gynecomastia procedure find that they are more confident in their physical appearance.
Techniques for male breast reduction vary; however, the most common procedure involves an incision that circles the areola. The surgeon then removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and rarely skin. Liposuction is used to complete the contouring. Occasionally, liposuction alone can be used to contour and reduce breast size. The best procedure can be determined during the initial consultation visit with Dr. Raine.
Post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. Bandages are applied immediately following surgery to aid the healing process and to compress the breasts. Once the bandages are removed, a binder will be worn for a couple of weeks. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery. Pain can be treated with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the instructions given after surgery.
